Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation



Physiatry is the medical specialty which orientated the rehabilitation of patients with physical deficiencies, with bone and muscular diseases, based on the principal of Biology, and static biomechanics. Orteses and prosthetics are used to aid the locomotion, to correct the articulations and to guide he physical means of healing.

Physical medicine is the way we use physical methods, such as machines and exercises, to re-establish the patient’s well-being, respecting the limitations.

Exercises such as GPR, Rolfing, Pilates and stretching are responsibility, guided and indicated by Physiatry. The Physiatrist works with a multidisciplinary team including a physiotherapist, a masseur, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, a physiologist, a nutritionist and a social assistant. It is a treatment where each specialist has a role and is coordinated by the Physiatrist.

The methods used in Physical Medicine are extremely important in the recovering of lesions caused by repetitive efforts, arthritis and its deformities, medullar lesions, muscular arthritis and lesions of tendons and ligaments.

There are new machines with varying current which are able to penetrate tissues and improve local circulation and at the same time sooth. Many times the practice of Physical Medicine is enough to solve some pathology.

Bursitis, tendonitis, arthritis, postural defects such as scoliosis, defect of foot, fibromyalgia, legions of the ligaments, meniscus and cartilage are some of the pathologies which can benefit from this therapy.
